Café Rabelais

HOUSTONS BEST FRENCH RESTUARANT WINE BAR

2442 TIMES BLVD - HOUSTON. TX - (713) 520-8841

Houston's Most Romantic French Restaurant & Wine Bar

Tucked into Rice Village just moments from Rice University, Café Rabelais feels less like a restaurant and more like a place discovered. Candlelight flickers against antique fixtures. Bottles of hand-selected French wine line the walls like a private cellar. Butter meets hot pans. Garlic perfumes the room. A cork eases free somewhere across the dining room. Laughter rises softly over jazz. For more than twenty years, Café Rabelais has offered Houston one of its most transporting dining experiences: classic French cuisine, rare warmth, and the kind of atmosphere that turns dinner into memory.

Cafe Rabelais Interior

A CORNER OF FRANCE IN HOUSTON SINCE 2000

Opened in 2000 by Chris and Laurence, who moved from France to Houston carrying their traditions with them, Café Rabelais was built not as a concept, but as a way of life.

Everything here feels personal because it is.

Paintings by family members hang on the walls. Espresso holders, charcuterie boards, and steak boards were handcrafted by Chris in his own workshop. Laurence—teacher, artist, hostess—brings grace and soul to every room she touches. On any given evening, you may even find their grown children helping service, continuing a family story Houstonians first came to love through their earlier restaurant, Max & Julie's.

This is hospitality with lineage. Warmth with depth. Elegance without pretense.

Plate of food

FRENCH CLASSICS, MADE THE WAY THEY SHOULD BE

There is a difference between food that imitates tradition and food that understands it.

At Café Rabelais, sauces are coaxed to depth, never rushed. Steaks arrive with a perfect crust and blushing center. Seafood is handled delicately. Vegetables are bright, balanced, and intentional. Every plate reflects generations of French culinary instinct sharpened by discipline.

"Our dinner experience was amazing. We were seated on time for our reservation. The service was attentive but not smothering. The atmosphere is romantic and inviting and meal was simply delicious. We are looking forward to our next visit."

#frenchrestaurant #houstonrestaurants #ricevillagerestaurants #frenchcafe #houstonBrunch at Café Rabelais has a very French way of slowing the day down.
A crisp glass of wine. A table tucked into the warmth of the room. Something buttery, something savory, something sweet. The kind of meal that begins with coffee and somehow turns into a bottle, a second course, and a reason to stay a little longer.
It is brunch without the rush. Elegant, comforting, and quietly indulgent, the way weekends should feel.
Join us for brunch in Rice Village every Saturday from 11am-2pm.

#frenchrestaurant #houstontexas #ricevillage #riceuniversity #winebarTruite Grenobloise- Trout with caper butter sauce, croutons, and root vegetables. Bright, buttery, and beautifully balanced. A classic French preparation that lets the fish shine.

#frenchrestaurant #houstontexas #ricevillage #riceuniversity #winebarRich, roasted bone marrow, bubbling in the bone and finished simply with parsley and sea salt.

Spread it over a grilled baguette while it’s still warm; silky, savory, and almost impossibly indulgent. The crisp bread gives way to that deep, buttery richness, bite after bite.

Primitive in the best way. Elegant in the French way.

Os à Moelle de Mamie, not a dish for restraint.

#frenchrestaurant #houstontexas #ricevillage #riceuniversity #winebarAt Café Rabelais, wine is part of the architecture.

It lines the walls, fills the shelves, rests in wooden crates, and waits in quiet rows for the right meal, the right conversation, the right moment.

These are bottles chosen with care. French wines with history, character, and a sense of place. Burgundy for something elegant. Bordeaux for something bold. Rhône for something generous. Champagne because, sometimes, the evening asks for it.

Come wander the wine wall, ask for a recommendation, and let the bottle set the tone.

#frenchrestaurant #houstontexas #ricevillage #riceuniversity #winebarThere’s something irresistible about a bowl of mussels arriving at the table still steaming, each shell opening into tender, briny perfection, bathed in a silky white wine cream sauce.

Garlic, butter, herbs, and the taste of the sea come together in every bite. Then come the pommes frites, ready to catch the sauce. The bread follows, because leaving even a spoonful behind would be unthinkable.

Rich, seductive, and meant to be savored slowly.

Moules Rabelais- a dish you think about long after the bowl is empty.

#frenchrestaurant #houstontexas #ricevillage #riceuniversity #winebarLe Suprême
Grilled chicken breast, caramelized onions, roasted cremini mushrooms, and melted Swiss on a crisp baguette. Comforting, golden, and unmistakably French-café satisfying.

#frenchrestaurant #houstontexas #ricevillage #riceuniversity #winebarGolden, crispy skin. Tender, juicy chicken. A rich garlic cream sauce made for savoring.

This week’s special pairs a roasted half hen with Brussels sprouts and sweet carrots for a classic French-inspired plate that’s hearty without being heavy.

Join us this week and discover your new favorite midday indulgence.

#ricevillage #houston #houstonrestaurants #frenchrestaurant #winebarThere are French fries… and then there are pommes frites.

Golden, crisp, impossibly addictive, and served the way the French intended — alongside a proper steak, tucked beside a baguette sandwich, or waiting patiently for their highest calling: being dragged through sauce.

Béarnaise. Bordelaise. Peppercorn. Moules Rabelais. Whatever is left on the plate.

At Café Rabelais, the fries are never just a side.

They are part of the ritual.
